Just wrapped up one of the most intense, rewarding weekends of my life at HuddleHive
– and we won the competition for our challenge! 🎉
Coming in as a newcomer, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But between the scavenger hunts, inspiring lightning talks, and late-night debugging fuelled by approximately 47 cups of coffee ☕, I found my people — passionate, curious, and driven to make a difference.
The highlight? Taking on a challenge to help minorities break into the renewable energy sector. 🌱⚡ Our team developed a platform, aiming to remove barriers and open up real opportunities. The judges loved it! The thing that I am most proud of is that judges were amazed by the level of detail and depth in our solution, saying they couldn't believe we achieved it within just 24 hours. Their validation felt incredible!
Our team Hacktopus (Negra, Rebecca, Raven, Toni), was incredibly diverse in age, ethnicity, skillsets, and expectations, which initially made it challenging to define our project's scope. We wrestled with scope creep and even debated continuing after a messy start, but I am so proud that we stayed persistent and united until the very end! 💪 🤩
Grateful for everyone who made this event happen, especially the mentors and organizers who created a space where ideas and people could thrive.
Here’s to more building, more learning, and maybe slightly less caffeine next time. Maybe. 😅
We started with a scavenger hunt, from getting all the team off dry land, replicating an album cover, to getting a photograph of a team member where it looks like they're in another country (see photos below). My personal favourite was performing magic tricks, such as making an object disappear!
It was a great team bonding exercise, that got us up and moving and working together. This was invaluable as we hadn't met each other before and was a great introduction to each other and our working styles. It was also a refreshing change from the usual stale ice breakers.
There were numerous, valuable talks and workshops from the sponsors sprinkled throughout the weekend.
Including:
Workshop on advancing your digital product skills, building impact-driven tech in an AI era
Workshop on the future of energy
Octopus energy kindly hosted us in their incredible offices, which provided an excellent atmospheare for innovation and collaboration.
We worked really well as a team, utilising our diverse backgrounds and skillsets.
We shared ideas, refined them and mapped out our plan of action. We assigned roles and tasks, managing our progress on a KanBan board.
